    Geospatial and Remote Sensing Advisor

    JOB PURPOSE

    Amnesty International is seeking highly skilled and motivated Geospatial and Remote Sensing Advisor to join our investigations team and strengthen the organisation's ability to conduct geospatial and remote-sensing analysis for human rights documentation. The post holder will ensure that geospatial and remote-sensing technologies are used effectively across rapid response and planned investigations to improve the quality, speed, and specificity of human rights fact finding. The post holder will play a critical role in expanding Amnesty International's research methods by identifying, assessing and scaling new geospatial datasets, tools and techniques.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Ensure that remote sensing and geospatial technologies are effectively used to strengthen the quality, speed and specificity of Amnesty International's human rights documentation.
    • Participate in research design across regional and thematic programmes and proactively identify and act on research opportunities, leading on and/or supporting multidisciplinary research as needed.
    • Respond to time-sensitive needs for geospatial or remote sensing analysis linked to crisis response or ongoing investigations.
    • Identify, assess and scale new geospatial data, tools and techniques to (among others) analyse events over time, conduct damage or impact assessments, identify objects of interest and anomalies, identify and quantify patterns, detect change over time and integrate multiple sources of data.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • A portfolio of geospatial/ remote sensing projects that demonstrate the ability to carry out complex research and produce high quality outputs. 
    • Experience with multiple remote-sensing modalities, understanding their strengths, limitations, and uses in human rights documentation.
    • Proficiency using GIS software (ESRI, QGIS, etc.)
    • Strong experience with cloud-based earth observation analytical tools (Google Earth Engine or equivalent).
    • Advanced geospatial analysis in at least one relevant programming or query language (Python, R, SQL, etc.)
