    NMR Administrative Officer

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint an Administrative Officer to provide high-level financial and administrative support for the UKRI-funded UK High-Field Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) National Research Facility (NRF).

In this varied and rewarding role, you will draw on your strong administrative background to enable the smooth operation of this national research facility.

You will work closely with the Director, Professor Steven Brown, the Technical Director, Dr Dinu Iuga, and the Facility Management Team (FMT, currently five staff, employed across the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, including Dr Iuga).

You will establish strong working relationships with the NRF’s Facility Executive (FE, 9 senior solid-state NMR spectroscopist scientists from 6 UK Universities, including the Director) and Oversight Committee (OC), as well as with industrial users of the facility and key external partners such as spectrometer and probe manufacturers and cryogen suppliers.

You will provide the administrative support required to facilitate the use of the three instruments associated with the Facility. You will be a first point of contact for all administrative and financial enquiries to the Facility. You will liaise with users, before, during and after their visit, including having responsibility for their accommodation on campus.

You will assist the Director and the FMT in preparing reports for the FE, OC, and UKRI, in particular financial statements and detailed reports on spectrometer usage.

You will organise and support meetings and events that facilitate the Facility’s operations and promote its activities to a wider audience, including supporting the Facility’s website and social media activities.

The post sits within the research facility and the post- holder is also a member of the Physics professional services team.

This post is available from mid-February 2026, for 24 months.

(A UKRI funding call to extend the funding of the NRF is expected soon; the bid for future funding of the NRF will include ongoing funding for this post.)

    Flexible Working

    • We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis (e.g. job share), despite the position being advertised as full-time.

    About You

    • You will bring a wealth of experience gained from working in a relevant administrative environment, ideally from within a University research or finance setting.
    • You will be experienced in financial administration and have a good working knowledge of budget management, financial reporting and processes.
    • Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will help you thrive in a collaborative setting.
    • With exceptional organisation, planning and time management skills, plus a high-level of attention to detail, you will excel at juggling multiple priorities.
    • You will enjoy working both independently and as part of a team.
