    Teaching Associate

The School of Computing & Communications (SCC) wishes to appoint a Teaching Associate to assist with delivery and ongoing improvement of lab-based modules on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This is a full-time position for a one year fixed period, with potential for extension.

You should be able to demonstrate a strong computer science background and excellence in lab-based teaching at University level.  Applicants should be flexible enough to contribute to teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.  The ideal candidates will have strong programming, and computational problem solving and software design skills. Additional duties include: supporting marking and assessment of coursework, contributing to curriculum development where appropriate, supporting students with exam preparation and revision techniques, and participating in teaching reviews and quality assurance processes.

We are particularly looking for candidates who are passionate about creating an outstanding lab-based learning environment.  Duties will be chosen based on specialist background, though they are likely to include an emphasis on cyber security teaching.  Particularly desirable specialist knowledge areas include cyber-security, applied machine learning and data mining, intelligent video analytics, natural language processing and artificial intelligence, autonomous learning and dynamically evolving self-learning systems.

The School is committed to excellent research-led and problem focused student learning.  This has been recognised by our recent institutional award of TEF Gold, and being noted in the UK for graduate prospects in computer science by the Times and Sunday Times University Guide for the third year running.  SCC at Lancaster is noted for its balanced blend of hands-on practice (labs) and theory (lectures & workshops).  We believe in a continuous process of teaching quality improvement and innovation (e.g. our award-winning studio-based approach to teaching software engineering).

We offer a range of degrees, including Computer Science, Software Engineering and joint degrees at undergraduate level, and MScs in Computer Science, Data Science, Cyber Security at postgraduate level.  The School maintains a good staff student ratio:  we’re currently home to around 50+ academic staff, 40 postdoctoral research staff, 120 PhD students and a combined undergraduate and taught Masters student population of approx. 1000.
