    Technology & Data Analyst

    PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

    • The Interactivity Technical Advice & Contracts Unit (ITACU) supports productions commissioned to make content for BBC UK Public Service, whether in-house, BBC Studios or an independent production company that contains a form of regulated interactivity, whether that’s competitions, votes, awards, giveaways, charity appeals etc. As our Technology & Data Analyst (Principal Data Analyst) you will be critical in our support to productions: by supporting on technology choice, implementation and use all the way through to results and data analytics the role contributes to ITACU ensuring minimal legal, regulatory and reputational risk to the broadcaster and high standard engagement cherished by our audiences.

Our support touches all parts of the BBC public service output and enables a chance to work with productions through strong working relationships, plus editorial and commissioning teams as well as data protection and privacy, accessibility as well as legal and commercial affairs teams, all focused on delivering audience-trusted services like voting on Strictly Come Dancing, Blue Peter competitions, BBC Make a Difference Awards or the broadcast promotions like BBC Lifeline. 

    YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

    • Supporting Interactive Production Managers in reporting. This may be complex ad-hoc reporting on episodic, series or historic data as part of our support to productions in current services and planning future services. 
    • Supporting the head of ITACU with routine reporting on interactive series – monthly and annual – plus ad-hoc work on specific projects or requests.
    • Providing a knowledgeable base of technology platforms available to all productions commissioned for UK public service broadcast, whether in-house, BBC Studios or independent production company. This include being aware of novel and developing technologies and knowing what might be more or less suitable for the production’s desired outcomes and supporting the team look at new platforms that may be of use to us in engaging with our audiences.
    • Providing practical support on implementation and use of technology platforms used ensuing the productions are using them correctly. This often in done working closely with the relevant Interactive Production Manager. They may involve creation, testing, deployment, maintenance, resolution (including winner picking) and closure. Being mindful of data this will require awareness of BBC policies on retention and deletion and our own deletion cycles.  
    • Engaging regularly with our third party platforms suppliers and the in-house tech teams, building strong, successful working relationships. 

    YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

    • Strong ability analyse data from multiple sources, often in a live environment; quickly, accurately and respond with clear directions.
    • Confidence in use of key programmes and platforms to provide data analytics to ITACU such as Tableau, Piano and Excel.
    • Strong ability to investigate new platforms and analytics tools, picking up skillsets promptly as and when needed. 
    • Experience in broadcast interactive services - demonstrating knowledge of technology platforms used, their relation to the programme and audience, 
    • Understanding and experience of audited processes and understanding why they are auditable.

    DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

    • An in-depth, up to date knowledge of interactive technologies/platforms, keeping on the edge of what is available coupled with the knowledge of what is useable for our audiences and ensuring they remain suitable.
    • Understanding why we may do things the way we: following the multiple regulatory rulesets that apply with knowledge of them, an approach that is confidently risk assessed and applies suitable mitigations. 
    • Experience in wider interactive services - demonstrating knowledge of technology platforms used, their relation to the individuals engaged, understanding of any regulatory rulesets that might apply there. For example competition or awards run by businesses other than TV of radio broadcasters, perhaps on platforms those businesses may not be using. These could be incentivisations or playalongs.
