We’re seeking an experienced commercial leader to head our contracts and commercial function within Procurement at the University of Bristol. Join an ambitious, research‑intensive university with a global reputation for excellence and a collaborative community where your work will have real impact.
As Head of Commercial, you will lead a small team of Contracts and Commercial Managers and be responsible for developing university guidance, training and advice on the management of external contracts. This includes direct responsibility for some of the University’s most complex contracts and the ability to advise on the commercial implications of external commercial relationships.
You’ll also play a hands-on role reviewing new strategic contracts to secure optimal terms on cost, quality and service, reporting to the Director of Procurement and collaborating with senior leaders across the institution.

What will you be doing?
You will:
Maintain and develop the University’s contract management framework, including risk‑based tiering, reporting guidance and training materials.
Provide practical support on commercial decision‑making and, where needed, intervene to raise commercial maturity and deliver financial and non‑financial benefits.
Manage a team of 3+ Contracts & Commercial Managers to deliver consistent, high‑quality contract and supplier management for strategic and critical contracts.
Determine which relationships are centrally managed versus locally owned within Faculties/Divisions, with clear guidance and support from the central team.
Strengthen contract management across key areas (IT, Campus, STEMed and Professional Services).
Negotiate complex commercial issues and advise on appropriate contract forms and commercial models, ensuring compliance with relevant public procurement legislation.

You have:
Significant experience in commercial, contract and supply chain management, with a strong strategic mindset and a track record of delivering savings, efficiencies and organisational change.
Exceptional negotiation, influencing, judgement and dispute‑resolution skills.
Excellent stakeholder management: confident communicating, supporting, and constructively challenging at all levels, plus strong numeracy, structured problem‑solving and clear written/verbal communication.
Working knowledge of the Procurement Act 2023 and familiarity with different contract forms and commercial models.
Relevant professional training/qualifications (e.g., MCIPS or WCC) or equivalent experience.
