    Role Summary

    Working under the direction of the Head of Communications and Reputation, the Marketing and Communications Manager will play a pivotal role in amplifying the global reputation of Universitas 21, a leading international network of 31 research-intensive universities.

    As Marketing and Communications Manager, you will bring creativity and strategy together to raise the profile of U21’s reputation worldwide, co-creating compelling stories and campaigns with U21 members and external partners. You will help inspire a global community of advocates across the network to help showcase the power of international collaboration and higher education. With a strong background in digital communications, the post holder will work with the Head of Communications and Reputation to support the development and delivery of U21’s communications strategy, creating engaging, innovative, and people-centred content that celebrates collaboration, global impact, and the human stories behind the network.

    Working closely with colleagues across the U21 Secretariat, communications teams across the network, and partner organisations, you will strengthen visibility, engagement, and advocacy for U21’s mission and activities.

    Main Duties

    • Support the development and delivery of U21’s global communications and reputation strategy, aligning all messaging with organisational priorities including key themes such as global education, global research, leadership, and social impact.
    • Champion innovative, people-centred storytelling across all channels by curating member voices and producing impactful digital content across multiple platforms that showcases U21’s global impact. Manage and strategically enhance U21’s digital presence, including the website, social media channels, and emerging platforms, ensuring engaging and accessible content.
    • Develop, deliver and co-create innovative integrated campaigns in collaboration with members and partner organisations to promote U21’s mission and global impact.
    • Produce and oversee high-quality multimedia content across editorial, digital, and print formats.
    • Strengthen engagement with communications colleagues across the U21 network, enabling shared storytelling and consistent messaging.
    • Contribute to U21’s member account management model to strengthen relationships, champion member needs internally, and ensure their priorities inform strategic activity.
    • Coordinate with colleagues within U21 and U21 members with regard to their internal and external communications, including newsletters, bulletins, toolkits and impact publications. 
    • Provide strategic communications support for U21 events, initiatives, and global programmes, including supporting live and post-event coverage.
    • Monitor, analyse, and report on communications performance to inform decision-making, align with emerging trends and ensure continuous improvement.
    • Contribute to organisational initiatives and deputise for the Head of Communications and Reputation where required.
    • Promotes equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

    • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience - where no equivalent qualification is held significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
    • Proven experience in developing and delivering communications or marketing strategies.
    • Experience managing and developing websites using content management systems (CMS).
    • Demonstrable social media management experience, including analytics and growth strategies.
    • Experience in creating engaging digital content, including copywriting, video, and multimedia.
    • Strong understanding of branding, storytelling, and reputation management.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into engaging, accessible narratives.

    The U21 Events Manager plays a pivotal role in strengthening U21’s global engagement, reputation and impact through the strategic design and delivery of innovative, high-quality international events. In addition to independently managing a high-quality and diverse event portfolio, the post holder will actively enhance U21’s profile and capture content that amplifies the network’s global story. 

    Working closely with colleagues across the U21 team and senior stakeholders from member institutions, the post holder will lead the planning, logistics and execution of events and face-to-face programmes that foster collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge exchange, while contributing to the network’s long-term goals. The role also involves representing the network at major international education conferences such as APAIE and EAIE and supporting U21’s presence at non-U21 events and external gatherings to enhance the network’s visibility and public profile. 

    The successful candidate will be an experienced events professional with strong organisational, administrative and project management skills and the confidence to engage with senior stakeholders. They will demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and maintain excellent attention to detail. Key responsibilities include managing event data and evaluation processes to inform continuous improvement, ensuring a strong return on investment and a consistently high standard of member experience. The Events Manager will champion innovative formats and technologies to broaden accessibility and global reach while contributing to long-term event strategy aligned with organisational priorities. They will also develop and document consistent processes and templates to ensure efficiency and quality across all events.

    Main Duties

    Event Management - Lead the planning, logistics, and delivery of U21’s international events portfolio in partnership with host member institutions.

    • Project Management - Project manage all operational elements including event programme scheduling, registration, delegate communications, accessibility requirements, and on-site delivery.
    • Strategic Content Development - Shape high-quality, strategically aligned event content in collaboration with the Provost and Heads of Global Engagement ensuring all content is designed to increase stakeholder engagement and enhance the participant experience.
    • Event Programme Design - Design agendas, briefing materials, session formats, and speaker coordination to ensure value for senior academic and professional stakeholders.
    • Process & Standards Development – Establish and maintain consistent event planning processes, templates, and best practice guidelines to drive efficiency, quality assurance, and alignment across all events.
    • Communications and Reputation - Ensure all events align with and contribute to U21’s reputation-building campaigns and strategic communications goals.
    • Collaborative Planning - Co-create communications and event plans with member institutions and collaborate internally across the Secretariat on in-person beneficiary programmes to ensure consistency of approach and delivery, while also supporting post-event content creation for social, web, and newsletters.
    • Content Development - Capture on-site event content (e.g., video, photography, quotes) to extend visibility and showcase the U21 community and story

    • Continuous Improvement - Champion innovation and continuous improvement, incorporating new formats, digital tools, evaluation frameworks, and sector best practice.
    • Stakeholder Engagement - Build strong relationships with member institutions and partners, representing U21 internationally and supporting its presence at key sector events.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

    • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience - where no equivalent qualification is held significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
    • Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, and to produce and analyse information and data.
    • Significant hands-on experience managing and delivering events on the ground within complex organisations, including in externally managed venues.
    • Experience of delivering international events including co-creating and coordinating with colleagues and partners across different locations and time zones, is highly desirable.
    • Strong communication, client-facing, and presentation skills, with the ability to listen to colleagues, understand their event needs, and propose innovative, creative solutions.
    • Ability to capture high-quality digital content (video, soundbites, photography) and apply strong storytelling instincts to identify and elevate engaging, people-centred insights from events.
    • Experience of contributing to multi-channel marketing and communications campaigns 
    • Excellent organisational, communication and relationship buildings skills with the ability to deal confidently with a range of internal and external stakeholders including senior management, academics and staff at all levels of the organisation and community.
    • Awareness of global HE sector priorities and the role of events in influencing and strengthening international partnerships. 
    • Confidence using digital engagement tools, interactive platforms or hybrid technology. 
    • Proven project management and budgetary skills are essential.
    • Demonstrably strong time and people management skills. 
    • Ability to work across functional boundaries to negotiate, influence and gain commitment from colleagues.
    • Willing to work unsociable hours as required by the nature of the work.
    • Ability to resolve issues and exercise sound judgment in making day-to-day decisions across the full range of duties.
    • An understanding of HubSpot or a similar Event Management System is desirable, but not essential.

    Role Summary

    Senior Engagement and Training Coordinator - IT Services -107056 - Grade 8

    This role will focus primarily on engagement and training around the Baskerville NCR, supporting a distributed community of researchers across the UK. At the same time, the post holder will join the team in supporting and building communities within the University. REDG’s role is to build relationships, maximising the take-up of the available services and ensuring diverse research areas can benefit from the service offerings by raising awareness, providing support and facilitating training, exploiting the expertise in the wider team. In relation to training, it is expected that this role will be focused on management and coordination, with the majority of the specialist training being delivered by Research Software Engineers from the Research Software Group. 

    Main duties

    • Lead and manage outreach around the NCR, contributing to internal outreach activities as required.
    • Working collaboratively, form partnerships within ARC, with academics, within IT Services and other professional services, across the University, and particularly with other national HEIs and research organisations.
    • Manage and coordinate service communications around the NCR, seeking expert technical input or delegating when required. Amongst other things, the task involves handling the messaging around both planned and unplanned outages accurately and diplomatically, ensuring the quality of the NCR’s webpages, the production of promotional material, as well as building and maintaining contact mail lists and relationships with relevant Comms teams within the University, and other organisations e.g. UKRI.
    • Develop, organise, promote and support the NCR’s training programme of advanced skills for research staff and students using ARC trainers, academics and externals. Explore and exploit a variety of delivery modes to best meet the needs of users and to make effective use of the available and limited resources.
    • Coordinate and generate appropriate supporting training material for remote use using multiple media e.g. video clips or online learning modules to increase accessibility and productivity.
    • Proactively seek out and engage with research groups unfamiliar with the NCR to facilitate solutions for them and raise awareness of how to apply via appropriate research funding applications.
    • Drive the development of an active user community through: 
    • Launch and showcase events across the UK research community
    • Seminars and networking events, locally, regionally and nationally
    • Coordination of challenge events or hackathons
    • Encouraging best practices and the sharing of knowledge and or experience including through technology Special Interest Groups and 
    • The creation and curation of research case studies, and recognition through citations in publications to demonstrate the success of the service and return on UKRI’s investment (and to meet the requirements of the NCR grant).
    • Originate, source and maintain appropriate documentation to ensure that the NCR service remains accessible to a wide range of disciplines.
    • Support the delivery of research-led teaching activity delivered by ARC.
    • Liaise and engage with external professional networks within the HPC sector, such as the HPC-SIG, to keep informed of the latest developments and sector initiatives, and promote the NCR service.
    • Seek feedback from users to enrich the user experience, particularly around training needs.
    • In addition to University provided training and development, you will undertake sufficient personal and professional development as required, ensuring skills and knowledge are up to date, so that the role is performed to the required level.
    • When requested, lead projects involving staff from other teams of IT Services, and research groups, following IT Services’ standard project management techniques, to achieve the agreed project brief.

    Required knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience

    • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification, preferably in a subject with a strong data component. A higher degree may also be held. Where no equivalent qualification is held a proven track record of extensive and substantial work experience in a series of progressively more demanding and relevant roles will be required.
    • Broad and deep experience advising and supporting researchers with complex computing needs with the ability to synthesise and translate complex technical services and issues for non-technical users of the service.
    • A strong understanding of the needs of researchers and how these might differ from corporate IT settings.
    • Sound understanding of core computing concepts including networking, security and scripting as well as a broad appreciation of the technologies that underpin the delivery of supercomputing services.
    • Familiar with UNIX or Linux as well as Windows PCs and Mac, and some associated software applications.
    • Good customer relationship management skills, coupled with high levels of diplomacy and the ability to deal with all levels of professional and academic staff.

    • An NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer (ACL) post offers doctors in specialty training a combination of 50% of their time in clinical specialty training (clinical service provision for GPs) and 50% in academic training.
