Overview
- Reporting to the Technical Manager (Chemistry teaching) the role is part of a team of Support Technicians who will principally provide support to the Teaching Laboratories with some support for Research and the School Facilities.
- The post holder will contribute to the planning, organisation and running of assigned teaching laboratories. This role will also support Analytical Services and the School Safety Officer as required.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Provide a range of technical support duties for Teaching laboratories with some support for Research and the School Facilities in Chemistry. Prioritise own work within a general plan or schedule to meet deadlines and appropriate standards and assist supervisors and other senior staff in planning future activity.
- Provide some instruction, advice and assistance on associated specialised teaching instruments, equipment and apparatus as required to students, demonstrators and staff, knowing when to escalate to senior colleagues.
- Construct and set up specialised instruments, equipment and apparatus, preparing chemicals, reagents, stock solutions and volumetric solutions with accuracy and dependability. Assist in the testing and calibration of instruments, equipment and apparatus.
- Troubleshoot non-routine faults with equipment and software and provide solutions, undertake / arrange repairs promptly referring to more senior staff if necessary.
- Monitor and plan sufficient stocks of consumables, equipment and chemicals.
- Contribute to the writing of new and update existing protocols and technical support documents as required, including standard operating procedures, H&S documentation (COSHH, risk assessments and waste risk assessments).
- Maintain an awareness and commitment to the relevant Health and Safety rules and regulations, ensure staff/students safety and good laboratory practice is maintained at all times.
- Undertake general laboratory, maintenance and administrative duties as required.

Overview
You will be motivated to work outside in all weathers to physically clean and remove extraneous debris from roof spaces and hard standings throughout the University’s estate. You will use access equipment, including MEWPs and cherry pickers, to clean roof spaces and outlets, and be competent in the use of a wide range of equipment to effectively clean a variety of roof and ground-level external spaces. You will be contentious, friendly, and approachable to support and sustain a positive working culture aligned with UOS values. You will support your allocated supervisor by providing effective, wide-ranging solutions to business activities, where your flexibility and diverse skill set will be an asset as you will work across our full portfolio of external spaces and locations. You will carry out planned and reactive works, ensuring your work is completed to a high standard aligned to timescales and SFG20 guidelines. You will exhibit a proactive, positive and can-do approach to work. You will be a good communicator and be able to form positive working relationships with a wide range of people, both within the university and outside. The role is operational, active and physical, requiring regular working at height, manual handling, use of vibration-causing equipment, driving of TUOS vehicles, and working at height plant and equipment.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Carry out external cleaning and removal of extraneous debris to roof spaces and hard standings across the estate.
- Undertake external inspection of roof spaces and hard standings and report findings.
- Carry out allocated works to the standards identified in SFG20 guidance.
- Monitor and maintain specialist equipment, plant and machinery, including working-at-height equipment, e.g. MEWPS.
- Ensure planned working-at-height activities are aligned with TUOS policy, current legislation, and permits are in place before commencing work.

Research support in the Science Faculty is provided by two hub teams who work with researchers across three schools. You will support and assist with a variety of research support activities, including costings and applications, responding to queries, collaborating closely with other Professional Service teams, and maintaining data. You will also contribute to University initiatives to share best practices and foster continual improvement. We are looking for someone proactive and flexible; pragmatic and solutions-focused; has excellent attention to detail; and strong customer service skills.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Application development support, including but not limited to undertaking routine costings; providing advice on funder guidance and eligibility; fielding queries & troubleshooting; advising on the application process; transferring data to funder submission systems and platforms (TFS, EU portal, etc.).
- Manage and maintain databases and pipelines that contribute to key university processes and monitor pre-award research grant activity, including applications, Fellowships, and equipment.
- Act as a first point of contact and assist with funding-related queries, helping to identify and maximise response to funding opportunities, including working directly with individual academics to identify appropriate funding schemes, as well as assisting with the organisation and support of research-related events.
- Support grant applications and quality review, including organising Faculty Sift/ Peer Review Panels, one-off individual Faculty peer reviews and mock interview panels, including setup of panels with various expertise, collating a database with mock interview questions, providing support to the panels, and collating feedback for applicants.
- Contribute to the smooth handover and set up of successful grants, working with colleagues in the Pricing and Contracts Teams from Research, Partnerships and Innovation, and Faculty Finance as appropriate.
- Collaborate with other members of the Research Support Hub to systematically organise and update data and materials on the Hub’s Shared Drive, while aligning with GDPR requirements for data protection and the University’s own Retention Policy.

As School Health & Safety Officer you will provide a professional, enthusiastic, high quality and comprehensive health and safety risk management to the School of Biosciences.
A key part of your role will be promoting the positive health and safety behaviours needed to deliver a high-performing health and safety environment to meet the requirements of professional competence, legislation and University policy. You will be responsible for ensuring that all staff, students and visitors have access to appropriate health and safety training, and will ensure that breaches of legislation and/or University policy are reported, challenged and resolved. Your actions will contribute to a positive safety culture, in which incidents are reported openly and used as learning opportunities to improve working practice.
This role will require the ability to analyse and design practical solutions to health and safety issues, and an ability to deal with difficult situations and influence behaviours with a high level of tact and diplomacy.
Applicants must have a good honours degree or significant experience in H&S position along with recognised NEBOSH Safety qualification. Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to persuade and influence a wide range of people to achieve changes in behaviour and excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt approach and level of advice for the recipient are also essential. Experience of working in a scientific environment is an important requirement for the role, and experience of a higher education environment would be beneficial, due to the breadth of teaching and research activity in the School
Main duties and responsibilities
- Act with the delegated authority of the Head of School on Health and Safety matters (both routine and urgent), bringing health and safety matters to the Head of School’s attention as appropriate, in order to ensure appropriate action is taken.
- Be fully familiar with the University’s Health and Safety Policy and work with the Head of School, School Technical Manager, School Manager and other senior leaders to develop, implement and annually review the School Safety Policy in line with University guidance and with reference to best practice behaviour.
- Review the School’s activities in relation to all University Health and Safety policies and advise on and oversee their implementation suggesting improvements where appropriate.
- Make frequent and regular visits to facilities across the School, in order to monitor compliance with University health and safety policies (including the safe operation of equipment, the maintenance of health and safety records, general housekeeping and the use of personal protective equipment), and assist staff in implementing these policies.
- Arrange and carry out regular health and safety inspections of School spaces, recording findings and ensuring appropriate action is taken as necessary, reporting the significant finding to the departmental H&S Committee to monitor School activity and ensure that adequate precautions are taken in relation to any new activities.
- Lead the Department’s preparation for Health and Safety audits carried out by the central Health and Safety team, ensuring all reports are made by the due date.
- Investigate accidents and incidents ensuring that all necessary reports are made to the University Safety Services and recommended actions are carried out.
- Working with relevant colleagues within the School, coordinate and deliver training on safety related topics, ensuring that appropriate health and safety training/induction of staff and visitors is provided and that suitable records are maintained.
- Maintain and disseminate health and safety information and reports as appropriate to staff.
- Monitor arrangements for fire prevention and first aid to ensure adequate cover.
- Organise and attend the School Health and Safety Committee assisting in setting the agenda and following up on actions.
- Advise on School arrangements for the generation, approval and review of risk assessments and SOPs. Monitor to ensure that the documents are suitable & sufficient. Provide support for employee induction and training and work with the Head of School to ensure that suitable monitoring and enforcement of safety requirements takes place.
