    Data Engineer - Trading

    Job Description:

    What’s the role

    • As a data engineer, you will work closely with traders and analysts to help create data solutions in Python, Databricks and Azure, to extract, process, store and display their data, in line with best practice software engineering processes and architecture patterns. In collaboration with a quantitative engineer, you are also expected to help productionize the traders’ quantitative models into data-driven software applications.

    What you’ll be doing

    • You will design and build data foundations and end to end solutions for Shell to maximize value from data. You are a key person to convert Vision and Data Strategy for IT solutions and deliver them. With your knowledge you will help create data-driven thinking within the organization, not just within IT teams, but also in the wider Shell stakeholder community.

    You will:

    • Communicate with both technical developers and business managers and gain respect and trust of leaders and staff.
    • Actively deliver the roll-out and embedding of Data Foundation initiatives in support of the key business programs advising on the technology and using leading market standard tools.
    • Coordinate the change management process, incident management and problem management process.
    • Ensure traceability of requirements from Data through testing and scope changes, to training and transition.
    • Drive implementation efficiency and effectiveness across the pilots and future projects to minimize cost, increase speed of implementation and maximize value delivery.

    • Degree level in STEM, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a relevant field of applied mathematics.
    • Proven years of experience in the IT industry
    • Proven technology champion in working with relational, Data warehouses databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases. Experience/Knowledge in working with NoSQL databases and can create E2E pipelines.
    • Experienced in building and optimizing complex queries. Good with manipulating, processing and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets.
    • Proven experience in working with (cloud-based) data engineering technologies like Azure / AWS, Databricks. Your experience in handling big data sets and big data technologies will be an asset.
    • Strong Python Developer with up-to-date skills, including web development, cloud (ideally Azure), Docker, testing, DevOps (ideally terraform + GitHub actions). 
    • Knowledge of application design, security, release, testing and packaging.
    • Very Good understanding in Data Foundation initiatives, like Modelling, Data Quality Management, Data Governance, Data Maturity Assessments and Data Strategy in support of the key business stakeholders.
    • Good understanding of math, finance, as role interacts with Quant Devs, analysts and traders.
    • Experience in working with AGILE, KANBAN methodologies. Able to run a sprint.
    • Ability to apply an analytical thought process and process complex information.
    • Able to work in a fast-paced front office environment and communicate directly with Quant Devs, analysts and traders.
    • Gas/Power Trading knowledge - Experience working in a Gas/Power trading environment, preferably LNG Trading.
    • Risk - Modelling & understanding of risk & risk management.
    • Quantitative modelling skills - Statistical methods to conduct analysis and develop models based on data, such as valuation models and predictive models.
    • Previously created or enhanced CI/CD build and releases pipelines.
    • Experience in working with scripting languages such as YAML, PowerShell, Terraform etc.
    • Experience with big data tools: Kafka, Hadoop, Spark and similar technologies. Experience with stream-processing systems

    Principal Software Engineer

    What’s the role

    • As the Principal Software Engineer, you will support the planning, development and use of middleware technologies and services for integrating systems and exposing, transporting and consuming data in a secure and reliable manner across a hybrid of applications, services and trading partners both on premise and in the Cloud.

    What you’ll be doing

    Key Accountabilities:

    • Experience in designing and implementing infrastructure for running long-term and short-term models using Containerization technologies
    • Deep Trading skills in Pre-trade analytics and Fundamentals. Expertise in the functional and technical know-how of processing and analyzing the outcome from the fundamentals data
    • Experience with Cloud cost optimization and implementing cloud-based telemetry and monitoring
    • Solution consultation and development in accordance with the enterprise technology principles, methods, standards, and practices
    • Estimation, solution design, detailed technical design, application technical deliverables including code, associated tests and documentation
    • Effectively running a sub team of at least 4+ DevOps and cloud specialists

    What you bring

    • As Principal Software Engineer, you should possess experience in evaluating and deriving trade relevant information from the variety of fundamental data – Weather, temperature etc. available from external sources. The candidate should be able to deliver visualization solutions for such data highlighting the key knowledge points useful in pre-trade analytics.

    Skills & Requirements

    • Extensive relevant experience in the industry in C#, Containerization using Docker, Kubernetes with deep trading skills in Pre-trade Analytics, Quant Model evaluation & proven expertise in building robust infrastructure to run complex Quant Models
    • Must have significant experience in Azure, and Kubernetes / AKS
    • Strong proficiency in C# and .NET Core development
    • Demonstrated expertise in building scalable, high-performance systems using modern programming practices
    • Ability to design and implement robust, maintainable, and efficient codebases that meet business requirements in GitHub & ADO
    • Deep knowledge of software design principles, including Event-Driven Architecture, Orchestration, and other best practices for creating scalable, high-performance systems

    Infrastructure for Long-Term Models:

    • Proven experience in designing and implementing infrastructure for running long-term and short-term models
    • Expertise in setting up systems to handle large datasets, including models running for over two decades of data, using Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) for orchestration and Docker for containerization to ensure scalability, portability, and efficient management of workloads
    • Proficient in leveraging AKS to deploy and manage distributed systems, enabling seamless execution of complex models and workflows

    Cloud Proficiency (Azure/AWS):

    • Proficient in deploying applications using Azure App Services, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Virtual Machines, and Azure Container Apps for diverse workloads, including legacy systems and serverless containerized solutions
    • Proficient in using Azure Container Registry (ACR) for securely storing and managing container images
    • Proficiency in Azure security encompasses expertise in safeguarding cloud resources and data through advanced security measures. This includes managing Azure Active Directory (AAD) for identity and access control, implementing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) for granular permissions, and securing sensitive information using Azure Key Vault
    • Proficient in-Service bus and Kafka services
    • Proficient in complex Azure SQL and Blob storage strategies for hot and cold storage

    Hands on experience with Cost Optimization techniques:

    • Skilled in saving large time-series data to Azure in epoch time-series format, which significantly improves system performance and reduced storage costs

    Proven experience of implementing various cost-saving techniques across different environments to reduce operational expenses, including but not limited to –

    • Optimize storage costs
    • Dynamic Autoscaling
    • Save Time-Series Data efficiently

    Market Dealer

    What’s the role

    • Reporting to the Head of Liquidity & Foreign Exchange (LFX), the role is a key interface between Shell and external financial markets, dealing foreign exchange, investing Group cash and ensuring that operating companies are funded.
    • You will be a key member of the Treasury Front Office team who are accountable for the Group’s cash investment strategy, liquidity and foreign exchange dealing.
    • You will have a broad network of interfaces across Treasury departments and Group Finance, as well as day to day contact with the Group’s broad banking relationships.
    • This role provides a fantastic opportunity to gain an overview of all areas of Shell Treasury and Group funding, building upon your expertise in financial markets and banking.

    What you’ll be doing

    • You’ll be working closely with other Front Office team members in London and with wider stakeholders in Treasury. You will manage group foreign exchange (~$250bln per year), utilising world-class technology and defining market strategies while operating within defined risk tolerances. You will also invest group cash (>$20bln), managing the portfolio based on credit risk, liquidity and yield. The role requires high levels of engagement and coordination with stakeholders throughout Treasury and the wider business; you will be involved in implementing intra-group funding around the world, engaging with Treasury Managers on M&A and refinancing projects, advising on FX and execution.

    More specific duties include:

    • FX dealing including spot & forward FX and currency swaps, and interest rate exposure management
    • Cash investment, focusing on money market funds, reverse repo and term deposits
    • Execution of intra-group funding including loans, derivatives and current accounts
    • Developing and maintaining external relationships with approximately 25 relationship banks

    What you bring

    • You’ll be an experienced Treasury dealer, comfortable utilising trading platforms such as Bloomberg, and working across Treasury Management Systems. You will have knowledge and experience of market best practice and a range of instruments in the FX and Money Markets.
    • The Treasury Dealer will have significant experience with Financial Markets and/or be a qualified Treasurer (Association of Corporate Treasurers or equivalent) or hold similar professional finance qualification, demonstrating expertise across the spectrum of Finance competences.     Quant Analyst

    Job Description:

    What’s the role

    • Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA) sells and actively trades energy related products and services associated with European natural gas, power, and environmental products. SE-EA was created in 2009 through the combination of Shell’s marketing and trading companies in Europe.  SE-EA is part of Shell Energy which is the commercial heart of the Integrated Gas Business and aligns all Energy Trading activity throughout the world. 
    • Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA) is part of Shell Trading & Supply organisation with a focus on European gas and power markets, and global emissions market. The European gas and power business is a highly dynamic and challenging environment, which requires SE-EA to continuously find new CVPs for its suppliers and customers to be able to grow its portfolio. This role will be part of European Gas and Power commercial business team located in London.
    • This role would work closely with the Gas and Power Trading, Structuring, and BD Team, to handle physical and financial structured products.

    What you’ll be doing

    The primary accountabilities of the Quant Analyst are:

    • Build pricing, modelling, and aid in automating execution across the Gas and Power space (Trading, Business Development and Origination), but with a lens across the entire Life of a Deal
    • Direct key “pre- and post-trade” quant support for the desks for all sort of quant solutions, trading and hedging decision support, analytics, and pricing activities as well as tooling, creating UI/dashboards as business-as-usual (BAU) activities.
    • Build all sort of bespoke quant models and methodologies for the Trading space as well as building blocks of models.
    • Standardize (and if necessary, refactor) them in the Quant Library and make them ready for deployment in available execution engines across SE-EA space as well as Ada++ complex valuation deal engines.
    • Internal model documentation of mature quant models and making them ready for model validation.
    • Build tactical solutions as well as support for the establishment of strategic (target state) solutions for EoD hPFCs as well as intraday curve and PnL positions to optimize real-time power and gas positions and pricing accordingly.
    • Be able to contribute to enable high quality, shared understanding of market opportunities, trends, and value potential.
    • Understand the gas and power deal funnel to appropriately prioritise new opportunities in the gas and power Trading space.
    • Capture and share learnings from both internal and external experiences to Shell to help improve commercial and operational decision making in Shell Energy.
    • Partner with IT, Business Excellence / Commercial Delivery to select and implement (full lifecycle; scope, design, build test & deploy) new IT solutions and enhancements to existing IT solutions in readiness for new value propositions or enter new markets.
    • Bring rigour/governance to the delivery structure and where feasible drive towards full automation.
    • Reporting to the Trading Quant Lead this new position will be responsible for improving analytics and modelling to enhance commercial activities within the SE-EA Gas and Power trading portfolio. This role will focus on modelling pre-and post-trade capabilities, providing innovative solutions which can then be focused on structural solutions. Grow the gas and power business in the mentioned markets and make them a significant contributor to Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA) P&L
    • The role will form part of the Gas and Power trading and business development network, acting as a focal point for commercial modelling between these teams. The incumbent will understand the end-to-end process flow of a trade lifecycle, and, through deep knowledge of the gas and power markets/business be part of a team to cater to structured, retail, and imbalance products across the Gas and Power spectrum.

    What you bring

    We are keen to hear from candidates with the following:

    • Significant experience in commercial /quantitative roles, specifically in the Gas and Power market, with a strong track record of performance.
    • Prior work with widespread and diverse Gas and Power asset portfolio, including optimisation, automated operation, function, and trading across all European markets.
    • Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) is desirable
